I had 13 warbler species on the main Lake Roland trail this AM. The most numerous were Yellow-Rump (50+), Redstart, BTB and Chestnut-Sided; the most interesting were probably Blue-Winged (1), Wilson's (1) and Canada (2). I did not see a single Black-Throated Green-- turns out, per Don's post, they were all in the Pine Barrens! After a 3 hour break because of storms, I went to Cromwell in the afternoon. I added 2 warbler species to my day's total (Prairie and Northern Waterthrush), but the main excitement came from a search for Bobolinks. I usually find these birds in early May in a lower field between Minebank Run and Cromwell Valley Rd. Today they were on the other side of the stream in a field surrounded by electrified fence-- gotta protect those Bobolinks! Actually, the park's organic farmers use the fence to keep the deer out. There were 80+ Bobolinks in and around the field, along with about 20 other species of birds. Especially notable were 1 Meadowlark and 6 species of sparrow-- Swamp, Song, Field, Chipping, White-Crowned, and Savannah. The Field was in juvenile plumage! Unexpected. I later encountered 2 adult Field Sparrows in another part of the park. I hope all these good birds stick around till tomorrow.
