Just for fun I kept track of all the birds heard over the system and they're appended at the end of this message. The biggest surprise to me, though, was not a heard bird but one I happened to spy: a male Summer Tanager moving slowly from limb to limb in the trees at the back of our yard. I heard one SUTA in nearby Maydale Nature Center about ten-twelve years ago but I was unable to locate that one to get a visual verification. This bird was not vocalizing at all but I got about a minute's worth of great looks at it. We must be at or very near its northernmost limit and this isn't a species I've ever actually seen before in Montgomery County, so it was a new yardbird--what a treat! Here are the rest of the "baby monitor" birds, including the dates noted and the count: Canada Goose 5/10/2003 6 Canada Goose 5/11/2003 6 Mourning Dove 5/10/2003 3 Mourning Dove 5/11/2003 2 Chimney Swift 5/11/2003 6 Red-bellied Woodpecker 5/10/2003 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 5/11/2003 1 Downy Woodpecker 5/11/2003 2 Northern Flicker 5/11/2003 2 Eastern Wood-Pewee 5/11/2003 1 Eastern Kingbird 5/10/2003 1 Blue Jay 5/10/2003 2 Blue Jay 5/11/2003 2 American Crow 5/10/2003 2 American Crow 5/11/2003 4 Carolina Chickadee 5/10/2003 2 Tufted Titmouse 5/10/2003 2 Tufted Titmouse 5/11/2003 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 5/10/2003 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 5/11/2003 3 Carolina Wren 5/10/2003 1 Carolina Wren 5/11/2003 4 House Wren 5/11/2003 1 Wood Thrush 5/10/2003 3 Wood Thrush 5/11/2003 3 American Robin 5/10/2003 6 American Robin 5/11/2003 5 Gray Catbird 5/10/2003 1 Gray Catbird 5/11/2003 2 Northern Mockingbird 5/10/2003 1 Northern Mockingbird 5/11/2003 2 European Starling 5/10/2003 5 European Starling 5/11/2003 3 Black-throated Green Warbler 5/11/2003 1 Common Yellowthroat 5/11/2003 1 Summer Tanager 5/11/2003 1 Eastern Towhee 5/10/2003 1 Eastern Towhee 5/11/2003 1 Field Sparrow 5/10/2003 1 Field Sparrow 5/11/2003 1 Song Sparrow 5/10/2003 3 Song Sparrow 5/11/2003 6 White-throated Sparrow 5/10/2003 2 White-throated Sparrow 5/11/2003 5 Northern Cardinal 5/10/2003 3 Northern Cardinal 5/11/2003 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 5/10/2003 1 Indigo Bunting 5/10/2003 1 Common Grackle 5/10/2003 5 Common Grackle 5/11/2003 5 Brown-headed Cowbird 5/10/2003 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 5/11/2003 2 Baltimore Oriole 5/10/2003 1 House Finch 5/10/2003 5 House Finch 5/11/2003 7 American Goldfinch 5/11/2003 1 House Sparrow 5/10/2003 3 House Sparrow 5/11/2003 3 Norm & Fran Saunders Colesville & West Ocean City, MD marshhawk@att.net ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
