We had six participants who were afield from 2:50 AM to 7:45 = PM.=20 Some of the highlight species included: 2 Greater Scaup at Cheaspeake (formerly Remington) Farms 1 hen Hooded Merganser on a pond (with duck boxes) along the Delaware = line east of Massey three rail species including a Sora at Eastern Neck NWR pre-dawn found = by Floyd Parks 3 Black-bellied Plovers on Handy Point Rd 2 Common Terns at Eastern Neck NWR 2 Black-billed Cuckoos 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher that burst briefly into song at the end of = Boxes Pt. Trail at Eastern Neck Two Willow and one Least flycatchers at Chesapeake Farms A late Red-breasted Nuthatch on Shadding Reach Rd near Millington A Lincoln's Sparrow at Tolchester Estates We recorded 29 warbler species including several excellent high counts. = Good finds included Nashville, Cape May (another was seen on Friday in = the county), Bay-breasted, and Wilson's. Some notable counts included 52 = Northern Parula, 57 Black-throated Blue, 10 Blackburnian, 24 Blackpoll, = 35 Black-and-white, 47 redstarts, and 73 Ovenbirds. Other good counts reflecting a migrant fallout caused by last week's and = Saturday's moody weather were - 51 Bonaparte's Gulls, 11 Caspian Terns, = 10 Veeries, 6 Swainson's Thrushes, 105 Wood Thrushes, 15 American = Pipits, 114 Indigo Buntings (many were on road shoulders at Eastern = Neck), 51 Scarlet Tanagers, 5 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and 17 Bobolinks. = Low numbers of several wintering birds appear to indicate how tough the = winter (gone but not forgotten) was. The listings show 2002 May Count = totals in parentheses for comparison. Carolina Wren 17 (93); Eastern = Bluebird 11 (60); Northern Mockingbird 49 (100), and even Northern = Cardinal 101 (231). These declines are all 50% or greater.
