I spent 7:30 AM to 10:15 AM just on the farm, the neighboring cutoff and the railroad and tallied 63 species. Migrant warblers included singles of Blackburnian, Redstart and Blackpoll and 2 Parulas. The Chat has arrived on the cutoff, along with 2 (and possibly now 3) Prairie Warbler. Other nice birds were 2 Scarlet Tanager and new for the year - a YB Cuckoo and Pewee. Of course, I get several birds that I missed on the spring count (Red-Tail, Flicker, a Green Heron, and 2-3 turkeys). After that start, I struggled to find anything else new on the other roads in the area. But a Kestrel (also missed on the count) on Horseshoe Road made bird #67 for the day - a new homelist single day high! And with 8 new for the year birds, the total stands at 117. To put that in perspective, in 2001 I reached that level on Sep 2, and last year on Oct 13. 4 months ahead of schedule? That gives me the rest of the year to add 20 birds. One other note - the Vesper Sparrows on Oak Grove Rd have been rather uncooperative this year. I could not find it either day this weekend. I have heard it in previous weeks, but only once was it sitting on the power line and singing where it was easily visible.
