The bird froze and allowed me to pass no more than 6 feet away. I'm assuming it was a Wood Thrush because an adult was singing a few yards away (and I haven't found Veeries at this spot); also the bill was very heavy, but not curved like a thrasher. It was just beginning to sprout rusty tail feathers and the rest of the upperparts were gray-brown with faint spotty white wing bars. Below it was white with extremely heavy black spotting -- more like streaking. I didn't think too much of this until I checked the Yellow Book, which gives an early egg date of May 7. These eggs must have been laid sometime in April.
