Within 90 minutes, we tallied 16 species of warbler along the south bank of the Patapsco River in Anne Arundel Co., starting at Snyder's Restaurant. What was amazing to me, is that I had 9 species within 15 minutes, and within 200 feet of I-695 during the afternoon commute. Despite the endless traffic noise, the birds were abundantly vocal, and just plain abundant. Best finds were a closeup of a male BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, and other migrants including CHESTNUT-SIDED, MAGNOLIA, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, and the ubiquitous BLACKPOLLs, which I actually got to see for a change. We also had a PROTHONOTARY at Pond #9. Other interesting birds in the area were WOOD DUCK with 9 ducklings, a pair of GREEN HERONs, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and a flyover PURPLE MARTIN. These sightings were all in the Relay NE atlas block. After leaving the Patapsco River, we birded the Mears Farm (corner of Rolling Rd. and Foxhall Farms Rd. in SW Balto. Co.), where our best finds were AMERICAN BITTERN, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, and about 20 BOBOLINKs. CHATs were singing all over the place.
