There was a pair of Ring-necked Ducks on Lake Elkhorn in Howard County on Wednesday. They were sleeping on the pond below the spillway, taking a break from trying to catch up with their buddies. Other highlights of my late afternoon walk were Green Heron, Eastern Kingbird and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. I spent most of the time observing the swallows hoping to see the Bank Swallows that Kurt had reported sighting that morning, but they were gone -- there were only Barns and a few Trees. But watching swallows swooping and diving over the lake in the late afternoon sun, twittering as they zoom back and forth from their nests above me in the gazebo, is such a delightful activity in itself that I felt the time was well spent even though I didn't see the BASWs.
