On 5/22, Duvall = Sollers and I birded along the coast looking for shorebirds and terns. = Highlight was a female Red-necked Phalarope in breeding plumage which = Duvall found along the causeway to Assateague. Other highlights - A flock of 30-40 Gannets feeding just outside the = inlet this morning. At least fifteen Purple Sandpipers still remain at = the inlet. Red Knots were quite numerous, we saw them at nearly every = stop. At Eagle's Nest, there was a flock of twenty-five Brant. I stopped = at Pickering Creek on the way home, most of the shorebirds had vacated, = but there were hundreds of swallows, martins and swifts. Among the = swallows, there was a least one Cliff Swallow.
