Rained most of the weekend for my 2 trips, Meadowside Nature Center and Layhill Park. Nothing much of note at Meadowside except a late singing WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on Saturday, May 25. Sunday May 26 at Layhill Park we had a really nice group of very good birders. Though it rained heavily for at least the first 2 hours, I don't think we missed a single bird. A reported Alder Flycatcher was seen Saturday there on Bonnie Otts trip but was not seen (though a couple of members of our group thought they heard one), but the male MOURNING WARBLER seen on Saturday was re-found in another location on Sunday. It was singing loudly for a time, and then called into view for a lucky few for perhaps 5 seconds. I wne tback after the conference to take down some trail ropes and found it again, this time getting much longer and better looks. This was close to 2 PM. I don't think it will be around long if it clears tonight... Other birds of interest: flyover Common Loon and Osprey, a flying, displaying Cooper's Hawk, Great horned Owl, Willow Flycatcher, both orioles, lots of Cedar Waxwings, Acadian Flycatcher and E.Wood Pewee, Magnolia Warbler, lots of Blackpolls, both Great Blue and Green herons. I have never seen so much water in the park, so much flowing through the park, and so much standing water in the park. Conditions, quite frankly, were horrendous, and it is only because of such keen birders that we were able to tally over 65 species before 11 AM. Thanks to all those who attended. You all deserve a medal!
