It is justifiably famous as a site for finding migrating warblers in spring. The grounds are practically a park, filled with exotic trees and with tourists seeking the graves of the many famous Americans buried there. I have birded there and in other cemeteries without a problem. As you pointed out, an individual wandering politely with binoculars is not unwelcome, but I agree that a field trip would be inappropriate.
