Actually several cemetaries around the country are noted birding spots. Besides Mt. Auburn there is the Swan Point Cemetary in Providence, RI; Oak Hill Cemetary in Newburyport, MA; Oakwood Cemetary in Syracuse, NY; Forest Lawn in Queens, NYC; and Spring Grove Cemetary in Cincinnati, OH. I am sure I am forgetting several others. Mt. Auburn hosts daily bird walks by the Brookline Bird Club from late April to the end of May every year. With all of the ornithologists buried there (e.g. William Brewster, Glover Allen, Ludlow Griscom) it seems entirely appropriate. Swan Point is also host to daily bird walks in May. So at least some cemetaries countenance field trips. Not too much time for birding here at Chesapeake Landing lately but we did have a new yard bird yesterday - a singing Wilson's Warbler. It ain't over till the last migrant sings.
