Best find for me was the block's first VEERY of this atlas, a male that's been singing along the entrance road to Patapsco Valley State Park, Baltimore Co (Avalon/Glenartney section) for about a month, and has now continued into safe dates. Other finds at Halethorpe Ponds 2 & 3 in Anne Arundel Co. were GREAT EGRET, one of which has been spending the past month in this area, and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, also resident in the area. PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was found in three different counties: one in Howard Co., along the river about 1/4 mile up from Lost Lake; one in Baltimore Co., where Herbert Run empties into the Patapsco; and one at Pond #3 in AA Co., where we had eggs in a nestbox last year. With all the rain and flooding, the nestbox has been under water much of this season. WARBLING VIREOS were very vocal in Glenartney and at Pond #2, and were confirmed this past weekend with fledged young in the vicinity of Herbert's Run. YELLOW-THROATED VIREOs continue to sing in PVSP near the Swinging Bridge. Last evening, the Relay NW block also picked up its first PURPLE MARTIN (#1 on the wish list!), as an adult male flew east from the big Halethorpe Pond (Relay NE) to Herbert's Run in the NW block. For once I'm saying hooray for the warm buggy weather.
