We spent the morning covering Millington - CE = a block just south of Golts that includes MD-330 (Maryland Line Rd) and = Black Bottom Rd covering much of the northern units of Millington = Wildlife Management Area. We covered open fields, stream crossings, and = the WMA HQ area along MD-330, and lower Black Bottom Road. We walked one = of the trails into the WMA encountering two nice ponds, one open with a = beaver dam, and the other filling with cattails (and even a few young = baldcypress).=20 We located 53 bird species confirming 14 and assigning probable codes to = a further 16. We enjoyed the atonal disjointed songs of Yellow-breasted = Chats, a soaring Red-shouldered Hawk, singing Grasshopper Sparrows, nest = building female Orchard Oriole and Blue Grosbeak, a pair of Barred Owls = with fledglings in tow giving their high-pitched wheezing calls, a = Yellow-throated Vireo, White-breasted Nuthatch (hard to find on the E. = Shore in summer), a single calling bobwhite, and dogfighting Acadian = Flycatchers (pure spunk). We also had lots of butterflies, a welcome = change, after all those gray, rainy days that had kept them laying low. = We had lots of tiger swallowtails, spicebush swallowtail, black = swallowtail, red admiral, question mark butterfly, summer azures, and = silver spotted skippers. Trip list (atlas code): Great Blue Heron (O); Black Vulture (O); Turkey Vulture (O); Osprey = (ON); Red-shouldered Hawk (X); Red-tailed Hawk (X); Northern Bobwhite = (X); Mourning Dove (X); Yellow-billed Cuckoo (X); Barred Owl (FL); = Chimney Swift (X); Ruby-throated Hummingbird (X); Red-bellied Woodpecker = (FY); Downy Woodpecker (X); Hairy Woodpecker (FL); Eastern Wood-Pewee = (X); Acadian Flycatcher (T); Eastern Kingbird (P); White-eyed Vireo (T); = Yellow-throated Vireo (T); Red-eyed Vireo (T); American Crow (X); Horned = Lark (X); Barn Swallow (X); Carolina Chickadee (FL); Tufted Titmouse = (X); White-breasted Nuthatch (X); Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (T); Eastern = Bluebird (P); Wood Thrush (T); American Robin (UN); Northern Mockingbird = (X); European Starling (FL); Cedar Waxwing (P); Ovenbird (T); Common = Yellowthroat (A); Yellow-breasted Chat (T); Scarlet Tanager (T); Eastern = Towhee (X); Chipping Sparrow (P); Field Sparrow (FL); Grasshopper = Sparrow (X); Song Sparrow (X); Northern Cardinal (T); Blue Grosbeak = (NB); Indigo Bunting (FY); Red-winged Blackbird (FL); Common Grackle = (FY); Brown-headed Cowbird (X); Orchard Oriole (NB); House Finch (X); = American Goldfinch (P); House Sparrow (NB).
