I did most of my daytime birding by ear while on my bicycle (training for a 5 day ride at the end of August). Saw and heard 60+ species this way. When I was riding it was harder for the mosquitoes to land. Nevertheless, I still have some spectacular bites. The best, however, was hearing the Black Rail vocalize early Saturday morning (around 2a - 4a) from the grasses very near the heavily wooded and marshy farm where I was sleeping on the screened porch only 20 feet from the river. Awesome! Across the river the Chuck-will's Widow was also calling. Also, both Friday evening and Saturday evening heard Am. Woodcock peenting. Finally, removed 4 Painted Turtles from the road while riding.
