No activity on or near the nest. In fact, no Red-shouldered Hawks in evidence anywhere near there this evening. As for the flycatchers, has anyone seen a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher on the canal recently? It was too dark to get a view, so I wrote down the song and came back and listened to Stokes. Actually, I wrote down two different songs, thinking they were two different birds, separated by at least 100 yards. The first was like the "ch'week" Stokes describes for the Yellow-bellied; what I wrote down (and heard) was not the Acadian's "pit-seet," which I had thought it would be. The second song was a dead-ringer for the "turweee" of the Yellow-bellied. When I heard it on the Canal, it had me stumped; I don't recall hearing that sound before (definitely not an Eastern Wood-peewee's, with the hitch in it, nor the Carolina Chickadee's similar sounding call). But there shouldn't be any Yellow-bellied Flycatchers around here now, should there? Also seen along the canal of note were: Black-crowned Night Heron (seemed like an immature; acted that way, anyhow) Wood Thrush (3 were singing at the parking lot on MacArthur at the start of the trail, 2 on the east side of the rd, 1 on the west) Great-crested Flycatcher Baltimore Oriole (male) Brown-headed Cowbird (fledgling who barely moved and wouldn't get out of my way) Gorgeous evening for birding!! (and mosquitoes) Good birding, Frank Powers Glen Echo, MD Montgomery County frankpowers@comcast.net ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
