Our house has a small back porch (not much bigger than an interior stair landing). A roof covers the porch, and square porch posts hold up the roof. Because of the plan of the construction, a small corner of each square post sticks out under the roof, forming a 1 1/2 x 1/1/2 inch tiny platform under the ceiling on each post. For the last 3 nights, a carolina wren has roosted on one of these small spaces. The first night, my wife asked me to "come and look at this bird," wondering whether it was sick. My son said that he saw it alight on the porch trellis, look about quickly, and then scoot up into the secluded spot. The bird is gone each morning. It has twice returned in the evening, squeezing itself into the small space (looking like a indistict ball of brown feathers), and then is gone in the morning. There is no evidence of nesting. Am I probably right in thinking that the bird is just looking for a safe roosting space for the night (despite our back porch lights and our dog who dashes noisily out on to the porch on her way to the back yard)?
