Date: Thu, 24 Jul 2003 09:33:12 -0400 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Les Roslund Subject: Shorebirds Show Up At Pickering Creek MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Yesterday (7/23), in early afternoon, the Pickering Creek Wetlands had the following birds: Stilt Sandpiper 1 Short-billed Dowitcher 6 Pectoral Sandpiper 6 Semi-palmated Sandpiper 1 Western Sandpiper 1 Least Sandpiper 16 Snowy Egret 14 Great Blue Heron 1 Osprey 1 Mallards 8 Since this is the first full season for these wetlands, there is no 'history' for what will show up - so surprises can come at any time. Vegetation on the wetlands has grown very well, but there are still lots of good viewing spots from the road. Best viewing of the largest pond is from beside the viewing platform (under construction). Quite a few of the birds have been using that largest pond, particularly the shallow side that is closest to the road, but blocked from the road view due to the vegetation.
