Date: 8/2/03 7:25PM Subject: 1996 Indiana Kelp Gull Record Accepted Birders, Because of the significance of this record for North America, I am providing the following information about a Kelp Gull sighted in Indiana in 1996. At their August 2, 2003, meeting the Indiana Bird Records Committee voted to accept the 1996 record of Kelp Gull that was seen in Lake County along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The bird was a third-year bird and was seen by a number of individuals on October 19-20, 1996. The record was thoroughly vetted and members concluded that the bird in question could only be a Kelp Gull (a number of photos and videotape were obtained). One member dissented and was concerned about the question of origin. Full details will be included in the Indiana Bird Records Committee Annual Report to be published in 2004 in the Indiana Audubon Quarterly, the official publication for such matters.
