There aren't many good, accessible shorebird locations in = Calvert county and there are even less this year with all of the rain. = Anyway, Flag Ponds wasn't too bad considering how many people were on the = beach. There was a small flock of about 20 Sanderlings, at the point, in = various stages of losing their ruddy plumage but not quite to their dull = gray basic. In a little hook at the point, there was a lot of detritus and = in that were 2 or 3 (they kept flying around) Least Sandpipers and one = Semipalmated Sandpiper. There was also a Semipalmated Plover and 3 = Killdeer. Gull species were minimal with one Ring-billed Gull standing at the point. = There was one Royal Tern diving for fish. We couldn't find any sparrows = where Arlene, Sue and I had Seasides and Saltmarshs back in May. On the road down to the beach, we spooked a family of Kentucky Warblers. = Typical of KEWAs where you don't even know they're there until you get too = close and they start yelling at you. Couldn't confirm a juvenile but the = agitation would make them a Probable, at least. Tyler Bell bell@acnatsci.org California, Maryland Wave that flag...wave it wide and high!
