Gwen and I were out today in several locations and did not find a one. We had none yesterday and covered the lower part of the county. They are usually easy to find down here. We also did not have the warblers reported from the traditional locations. There were more dragonfly and butterfly species than birds at Bumpy Oak and the old sewage treatment plant in Bryans Road, MD. Our only warbler was Common Yellowthroat. Nothing remarkable in the avifauna department. We had more passerines at the house including a single Blue-gray Gnatcatcher feeding late. Wood thrush are on the move. I did hear one during predawn flight over the house, and several other unknown calls before 6:30 AM. I still need to find that warbler hotspot in Charles. Maybe near Cobb Island. The one highlight was a family of Carolina Wrens at the old sewage treatment plant with two recently fledged young. They were at the entrance to the old treatment plant path at the end of Amherst Rd.. They could hardly fly but eluded my camera. The other highlight was a recently fledged female Red-bellied Woodpecker preening at Bumpy Oak. This spot seems to be excellent for Olive-sided flycatchers (OSFL) with all the dead snags in this wetland, but so far no OSFL.
