If you are thinking about coming down to the CBBT to bir= d,=20 remember to bring your letter of permission and to check in with police at t= he=20 appropriate toll plaza. They have temporarily closed Islands 2 and 4 owing=20 to severe storm damage. =20 Island 3 is probably a good vantage to see birds leaving the Bay, but Island= =20 1 could be good too (the restaurant was not open today -- bring water, food,= =20 drink with you). Many birds we saw today did not leave the Bay at all. Tow= ard=20 evening, there were still dozens of Bridled Terns in view from Island 3, and= =20 all three species of storm-petrel were milling around well west of the=20 Chesapeake Channel (between Islands 3 and 4). So I would expect that dilige= nt=20 scoping of this area tomorrow, especially earlier in the morning and in the=20 afternoon, could produce most of the birds spotted today. Identification of= the=20 storm-petrels is challenging if they are new to you, so it's good to brush u= p with=20 a good field guide before starting your birding day. I would expect that=20 there would be a small contingent of experienced observers present tomorrow=20= and=20 Sunday on the CBBT to help folks with identification and spotting. =20 Ned Brinkley Cape Charles, VA=20 You are subscribed to VA-BIRD.
