Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2003 15:49:56 EDT Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Mary Ann Todd Subject: Sooty Tern, Pom Jaeger on Friday MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sorry for the late report. Friday SEP 19: 7-8AM Little Seneca Reservoir, wind SE 20 no rain, 2 Common Terns. 10AM-3PM east side of Bay Bridge at Hemmingway's Restaurant. Most Kent Island roads underwater, but this was not. Wind S 20. 2 Brown Pelicans and 15 Sanderlings present and hanging around. A steady trickle of Common, Forster's and Royal Terns going south. One Black Tern. At 10:30 an adult Sooty Tern flew south, not stopping. At 11:30 a very bright juvenile Red-necked Phalarope flew south very close to shore. At noon an adult Pomarine Jaeger, mostly in alternate plumage but missing its central streamers, dropped down headed south over the bay. It then turned, climbed high overhead, circled several times, then headed NE. A Glossy Ibis and several Egrets wandered by at different times. In the afternoon the wind turned back to SE, and the tern flight dwindled. Sandy Point was apparently closed all day. Birders who asked if they could walk in were told "no." The west side of the bay may have been better, as the winds did not go SW. Thursday the SEP 18: 7AM-2PM at Violette's Lock and Seneca, Potomac River, Montgomery Co., winds NE10, no rain, nothing. 2PM-4PM Little Seneca Reservoir (Black Hill Park), Montgomery Co., winds NE30 heavy rain bands, nothing. So no birds ahead of the storm as for Hurricane Fran, but that happened when the wind turned SE. The timing may have been wrong this time.
