The reason I ask is that I hosted a "lost" homing pigeon earlier this month over here on the Eastern Shore near Tunis Mills. My refugee arrived Monday, Sept 8, and stayed until the 11th. It was so fatigued at first that I probably could have readily caught it, but I did not try. It had bands, which I did not read. I fed it, and it preferred corn; and gave it water, which it seemed famished for on Monday. It left Tuesday afternoon, returned Wednesday afternoon, was still around Thursday morning but left that afternoon and was not seen again. According to one internet source, lost birds aren't really lost, just tired out. They normally go home after a day or two of rest at a host site. My tenant was white of body but had blue wings and a brown-toned back. Very pretty bird. Roosted on a large limb of a Black Cherry at night.
