I missed any excitement associated with Isabel, plus some of the late summer shorebirds, but was a bit busy with house renovations anyway. A brief visit to UMBC this afternoon produced an always-welcome AMERICAN BITTERN at the Alternate Storm Water Management Pond, located at the end of the loop, within the research park. The bird flushed as I walked around the pond. Several sightings in the area during Spring have made this a banner year for this species in southwest Baltimore County. For the atlas, we only missed safe dates this spring by about four days. An OSPREY flying over the research park, while seemingly mundane, may be a first campus record. Guess there just haven't been any observers spending autumn afternoons scanning the skies there.
