North Beach was hit pretty hard, but my place was spared. Although the storm surge was about 6 feet, the first floor is at 6 feet & 2 inches .... just enough that no water got inside. My deck is essentially intact and is the only deck that was neither severely damaged or totally destroyed. About 10 years ago my brother-in-law was visiting and decided that I needed a hurricane-proof deck [he is a contractor from California]. We took a week and built something that we hoped would suffice. Without the deck it is quite likely that the house would have been severely damaged or destroyed. My greatest problem is the layer of mud in the yard, but in time the earthworms and lawn will hide that. The boardwalk that was in front of my house was destroyed; however, work is under way at this moment to replace it. Along the Bay frontage at least 3 houses have been condemned and a few more may be added. Storm surge damage occurred all around the Bay. In many places the surge surpassed all previous records and will be the new bechmark. Since the storm a few Sanderlings have taken up residence on the stone jetties and a Lesser Black-backed Gull visited for a day. Good Birding!
