They are recording bird songs, call notes, etc, and compare the recording (sonograms) to a reference library. Likely the Dicksessel report is reliable if the recording matched the reference library. The CD they put our (Flight Calls of Migratory Birds at www.oldbird.org) is quite helpful with nocturnal flight calls. With patience and work you could add a few new birds to your lists, no matter which one it is. He told me that they had a Dickcissel on an audio recording on Oct. 2nd 2003. He also mentioned seeing an adult Northern Goshawk on Oct. 5th.
