Subject: Kenilworth Park, 10/13 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Had a nice morning at Kenilworth Park in NE DC today (Mon, 10/13). Highlights were 8 species of sparrow, including 2 LINCOLN'S, and 1 imm. WHITE-CROWNED. Also saw 2 (poss. 3) EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, and had a fly-over AMERICAN PIPIT. A flock of c.10 PINTAIL flew over the Aquatic Gardens, as did a flock of 5 AM. BLACK DUCKS. An adult BALD EAGLE was sitting on a log in the middle of the lagoon at the Gardens. And I heard (but did not see) a GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Warbler-wise I saw 1 BLACKPOLL, c.30 YELLOW-RUMPED, and c.25 PALM WARLBERS. Last week the Palms were predominantly of the Western ssp, but this week the Yellow ssp arrived, and outnumbered the Westerns. In the "old world warbler" department, there were 2-3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS in the Park, and 4-5 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS at the entrance to the Aquatic Gardens (you were right Terry & Virgil). Raptor numbers were low today, with only 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, but last week there were 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS, each perched on top of a soccer goal post. I think they were looking for a pick-up game. Accompanying them were 3 different RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS (also on distant goal posts), later joined by a COOPER'S HAWK (on the post). A RED-TAILED HAWK in the trees completed the raptor show. Also saw 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS that time too.
