I think they are seeking native food mostly now, and it is coincidental with the storms arrival. Surely some did perish in the storm, but I don't think the storm was that violent here. This disappearing act happens each year when lots of native food is around. The bird feeders save money, the birds practice traditional feeding habits, and will return. I will be out on Saturday looking at southern Charles Co. and will be looking to see if the Goldfinches are eating wild thistle. I hear them flying over head at the house in Waldorf but none are currently feeding at the thistle feeder. The deer are also not eating too much corn these days.
