It was the first time I've ever seen a Wild Turkey at Patuxent, although in the past I have seen what looked like turkey tracks in the snow. Jane Fallon told me that Wild Turkeys are fairly common on the North Track of Patuxent but not so common on the Central Track. I suggested that maybe the turkeys do not like to cross the Patuxent River. Late yesterday I was traveling along the River Road in the same general area and flushed a Wild Turkey that, I guess, had gone to roost in a tree for the evening. I heard its wings and saw it flying across the Patuxent River. But it did not quite make it over the 15-20 meter stretch and it landed in the river! Fortunately for the turkey, it landed maybe only two meters from the far shore and managed to either swim or wade the rest of way and scramble up the far bank. Mark W.
