Today a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was seen up high in a Loblolly Pine, along with several Ruby-crowned Kinglets and one Pine Warbler. Some nearby woods held six woodpecker species - RED-HEADED, Pileated, Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied and Flicker. Yesterday my own yard yielded White-crowned Sparrow, PURPLE FINCH (3 - including one beautifully marked adult male), Chipping Sparrows (40+), one Brown Thrasher, two Swamp Sparrows, many Juncoes and White-throats, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, over 75 Cedar Waxwings and over 200 Robins feasting on every kind of berry that they could find; Eastern Phoebe, many Yellow-rumps, one Red-tailed Hawk and one Snow Goose flying over with two Canada Geese. Over 600 Canada Geese have been on Leeds Creek the past couple of nights. Yesterday, near Gregory Road, one Brown Creeper was seen. Early this morning two Great-horned Owls were providing a duet from a walnut tree right beside our house. Perhaps they were bragging - for a neighbor recently reported a decapitated domestic goose in his barnyard. I am told that such kill is the style used by Great-horned owls.
