Churchill mentioned in a previous post, I spent the day at the Town Hill hawk watch in eastern Allegany Co., MD. The blustery conditions with intermittent snow showers seem to result in good flights of Goldens at Town Hill. Between 7:30 and 4:30 I tallied 23 Golden Eagles with 15 of those between 9:00 and 12:00. My previous high count was 11 on 11/16/97, a day with weather very similar to today. Jim Paulus, who spent a number of years counting at Town Hill and had a lifetime total of more than 500 Goldens, had a high one-day count of 13. Clearly, today was special. Few other birds were willing (or able) to deal with the winds as I totaled only 11 Red-tails and 1 Turkey Vulture. No swans, geese, loons. I wasn't too upset though. It seemed like a pretty good day. :>) Happy trails ....
