Subject: 2 Selasphorus, sp. in DC Comments: cc: Janni Ottavio MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I just got back from seeing 2 Selasphorus species of hummingbirds in a yard in NW DC. The extent of rufous on the face and throat, and length of the bill suggests Rufous or Allen's (and not Broad-tailed or the somewhat similar Calliope). Apparently they arrived shortly after the cold front came through on Thursday, and have been regular ever since. The birds are coming to a yard at the corner of W St. & Observatory Pl. (Rd?) - address is 3713 W St.. There are two feeders and lots of flowers at this corner, and viewing is easily done from the sidewalk - no need to enter the yard. They were not there when I first arrived, but showed up within about 1 hour. The more dominant bird (which shows a small irridescent patch of rufous in the center of the throat) had staked out the front, which has 1 feeder and lots of flowers. The second bird (which doesn't have any irridescent throat feathers) gets the feeder in the back. The owner, Chris Lidy, is very nice and said it was OK to post this.
