Fox Sparrow on 11/12-14/03 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii With so many reports of Purple Finches, I thought I would remind all that brown-plumaged Purple Finches and a mixture of females, both young and old, and young males. Males do not get the 'purple' until the end of the first breeding season and are identical to females until then. So one cannot call the brown birds females. It sure is nice to have a finch invasion. Haven't had any Purple Finches or Pine Siskins at my feeders yet. Have plenty of goldfinches and parids. I too have noticed that my House Finches have disappeared and as yet have not been replaced by wintering birds. It is not uncommon for the local House Finches to wander and even move south in the fall but in the past I have always had some House Finches at the feeders,. Co. Fox Sparrow on Birds & Birding 11/12-14/03 11/15/03 06:27 PM Please respond to Maryland Birds & Birding Sorry this post is late, but do to a certain weather event and a very slow BG&E Company, I have not had power until tonight. I was visiting at my parents property between 11/12-14/03 at Hancock in Washington Co. MD. The following were noted: 100+ Cedar Waxwing (already devouring the Holly berries) 15+ Purple Finch (many more females than males) 12+ American Goldfinch (eating Hemlock seeds) 2 Eastern Meadowlark 6 Wild Turkey 1 Fox Sparrow (beautiful rusty-brick red) My mom also said that the Chipping & Tree Sparrows were back, but I did not see any while I was at home. No signs of Red-breasted Nuthatch, Pine Siskin or Grosbeak. Also, no sign yet or the partial albino White-throated sparrow that has returned for several years to their home.
