The woodpecker is a juvenile bird, with a medium brown head having just a few incipient red feathers. The prominent white wing patches were noticeably overlaid with dark brown bars. I heard the bird's "rattle" before I saw it. It was apparently putting food (acorns? berries?) into holes high in a large bare tree on the Anacostia River side of the River Trail, about 2/3 of the way to the end of the trail. There was no sign of any others of the same species in the vicinity, but there were Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers around. Other interesting birds found at KAG this morning were BROWN THRASHER, FOX, SWAMP AND FIELD SPARROWS, along with a fairly late GREAT EGRET. Elsewhere in DC today: Georgetown Reservoir held about 50 RING-NECKED DUCK; Hains Point had a perched MERLIN. Mike Bowen Bethesda, MD D.H.
