December is knocking on our door and each time you look into your favorite watering hole, you come up bumpkus for Bufflehead! Just what is going on here? Did Isabel change the river? Has urban and suburban development made a noticable impact this year? Has waterfowl migration really been delayed? Or, are we just looking in all the wrong places? Here is your chance to contribute to understanding waterfowl abundance in our area - volunteer for the Fairfax Audubon Society Waterfowl Count next Saturday, Dec. 6th. You get to team up with other birders interested in waterfowl. And then go out and find them - in the neighborhood ponds, in the river marshes, in the middle of the Potomac and anywhere else you think will harbor a unexpected prize! There are many opportunities to be on a team birding from places not normally open. Or, fine opportunities just to learn what waterfowl live in your neighborhood. Its fun and produces valuable data - and by comparing to last year's census, we just may be able to learn something about this year's waterfowl presence. The FAS Waterfowl count is unique to the mid-Atlantic area and has already provided invaluable data in delineating potential Important Bird Areas. To continue this important work, we need you to help out! If you are interested in a morning's outing or a full day of waterfowling, please drop us a line. Thank You Very Much and - Wishing You All Great Birds in December!
