Two winters ago Purple Finches did stay around in Montgomery County the whole winter - I could get them every time I went to the woods west of Hughes Hollow along River Road throughout the winter - but they never appeared at our feeders after mid November. So perhaps when they settle in our area for the winter, they stay near a reliable source of favored seeds and don't roam around very much. Could have easily missed them as they are usually a one-day wonder in my yard.
