The roads were mostly fine and ploughed, with the snow cover in the woods and fields pushing many birds onto the road edges. Decent numbers of sparrows, including 10 Savannah along West Offutt Rd. I don?t normally see this species on this route in winter, so I presume they stay well into the grassy fields when there is no snow. There were scatterings of Red Fox and White-crowned Sparrows. I saw one adult White-crowned that had pale lores and a bill with distinctly orange tones, perhaps a Gambell?s (and got not particularly good pictures of the bird). Even Rusty Blackbirds were pushed out into the roads to look for food ? there were around 15 or so on River Rd around 1-2 miles north of Sycamore Landing Rd. Purple Finch still seem to be in the woods in this whole area particularly nearer White?s Ferry. There was also a Red-headed Woodpecker calling from one of the woodlots along West Offutt ? they seem to be regular here in fall and winter this year, and there was an Eastern Phoebe along upper River Rd.
