I'm now living about 22 miles north of the "point" and probably not going to be looking at PLO on a daily basis as I once did. My main birding area will be central St Mary's Co. I started at Newtowne Neck Rd to cheque for field birds and waterfowl and with the high winds it was difficult to say the least. The following is our sightings. The other two observers were Pat Rose and Chris Ordiway 2 enthusiastic newbies who had a good initiation to blustery conditions near the water. Northern Harrier 5 (all F) Tundra Swan 13 Crow sp 30 Turkey Vulture 20 Red-tailed Hawk 5 Bald Eagles (2 adult 1 M 1 F courtship display) Ring-billed Gull 1 Northern Mockingbird 1 Leonardtowne Wharf Double-crested Cormorant 3 (2 adult 1 first winter) Forster's Tern 6 Ring-billed Gull 30 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Bald Eagle 1 (1st winter) Beauvue Ponds Tundra Swan 36 Northern Harrier 7 (6 F 1 M) American Coot 1 Hooded Merganser 31 Mute Swans 6 Canada Goose 4 Ring-necked Duck 100 Black Duck 3 American Wigeon 30 Short-eared Owl 2 (1 M 1 F) Mallard 100's Ruddy Duck 5 Because of the brutal wind conditions #'s were low and we actually only spent 4-5 hours in the field. Most of the time was spent birding from the car and trying to keep warm.
