While it certainly makes life easier, it by no means provides a balanced diet that could ensure survival. The birds are here, we see them when they come to feeders. These birds feed on sap and insects and who knows what else. Twice now, I have heard a hummingbird near my house, and there are no feeders out. I have yet to see it and may put out a feeder to attract it for banding. But it is there and has survived temps into the teens.
