Beetham" Subject: National Arboretum Birds 12/13 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit A walk through the National Arboretum this morning and afternoon produced the following species: Great Blue Heron Canada Goose (Anacostia River) Hooded Merganser (three males, one female; Anacostia River) Common Merganser (six females; Anacostia River) Red-shouldered Hawk Ring-billed Gull Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Pileated Woodpecker Golden-crowned Kinglet (three females; dogwood collection) Ruby-crowned Kinglet Cedar Waxwing (crabapples) Northern Mockingbird Hermit Thrush American Robin Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Blue Jay American Crow Fish Crow Eastern Towhee White-throated Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco (several large flocks of 10-15 birds) Northern Cardinal Purple Finch (crabapples) House Finch (crabapples) American Goldfinch (crabapples) The major areas of activity today seemed to be the bushes along Beechwood Rd., the Asian collection, and the crabapple trees at the edge of the holly and magnolia collection. One tree hosted three purple finches (a male and two females), two house finches (a male and a female), a cedar waxwing, and a robin, all feeding on its fruits.
