Early this morning though I took some trash out while it was still dark and I was relieved to see the twinkling of the lights of the platform over Assateague. By the time we got to the island to drive the ORV Zone, however, the darned thing had disappeared! After a diligent search we re-located the platform obviously steaming at some speed southward. The "thing" was further offshore and a LOT further south. It was making some pretty serious time through the water, as well. By the time we reached the Virginia state line on the ORV, the platform's three legs had all but disappeared over the horizon. So, it had obviously plopped itself down off Assateague on Sunday night and then hung out weathering the heavy rains and very thick fogbanks of Christmas Eve, only to pull up its legs and wisk away in the dawn of Christmas Day 2003. Will we ever know the whole truth now???
