I've never managed to do this in one outing before, so it was very exciting. The highlight of the walk was an immature red-headed woodpecker we saw as we headed west near Mile Marker 24. The bird was about half molted into his mature plumage, with a mix of brown and red feathers on his head, but with the clear and unmistakable patterns of white and black feathers on his back and wings. The bird circled and dove among the treetops along the trail over our heads for nearly half an hour. It was sunny, mild and breezy on the towpath this afternoon, and the full list follows: downy woodpecker hairy woodpecker (3) yellow-bellied sapsucker (2, M & F) northern flicker (6) red-bellied woodpecker (4) red-headed woodpecker pileated woodpecker (heard several, saw one) eastern bluebird (2) white throated sparrow (15) cardinal white-breasted nuthatch red-shouldered hawk black vultures (along the road) cedar waxwing (25 or so) mallard Lori K.
