The warm = weather and light winds bought hope that birds would be active. Gwen = Brewer and I had nearly 70 species. The highlight for me was the three = displaying American Woodcock on Cedar Lane in Nanjemoy about 5:30 PM. = This is the first CBC I have ever had displaying Woodcock - a real = treat. Owls responding were Great Horned and Eastern Screech in the = Nanjemoy area. Gwen and I had 11 species of waterfowl included about 40 Gadwall, three = Northern Pintail, 200+ Lesser Scaup, 3 Canvasbacks (Gwen only), 12 = Red-breasted Mergansers, and an unknown number of Tundra Swans. We = could hear the swans but could not find a location to see the birds. We = also had about 12 Mute Swans. =20 We had all seven woodpecker species. Perhaps 15 Yellow-bellied = Sapsuckers scattered throughout the 2 B sector. (We need to add up the = ticks.) We also had six Red-headed Woodpeckers at the Nanjemoy Natural = Area. This species is well represented this winter down in Charles Co. = Along the way we had four Brown Thrashers and three Northern = Mockingbirds. A small surprise. Two Red-breasted Nuthatches were = located at the end of Benny Gray Point Rd, and only two Eastern = Bluebirds all day. The bluebirds were at the Nanjemory Center. Hermit = Thrush were located at three locations, and seem to be low for the = sector. Six Cedar Waxwing on Walters Landing Rd. filled to spot for = this fruigivore. Of the nine species of sparrow, the three Fox Sparrows at the end of = Friendship Landing Rd. were the highlight. We did have about 12 Field = Sparrows along Tayloes Neck Rd to tick that lovely animal, and 5 or 6 = Eastern Towhee were found along the way. The only Warbler species was a = good number (maybe 30) Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warblers. =20 Good birding and 04 to all.
