A stop at Brighton Dam to scan from the edge of the highway (apparently the only place one can get to the lake these days) yielded a solitary American Black Duck and a flock of close to 500 Common Mergansers stretched across the middle of the lake. At Little Seneca Lake, checking from the boat launch area and later from the Clarksburg Road pullout produced: Pied-billed Grebe 1 Canada Goose 500+ Mallard 2 American Black Duck 3 Canvasback 1 Ring-necked Duck 124 Greater Scaup 2 Common Goldeneye 3 Bufflehead 153 Hooded Merganser 1 Common Merganser 20 Ruddy Duck 50 American Coot 41 There was NOTHING on the water at Seneca Creek State Park, and I failed to find the White-fronted Goose at Montgomery Village. I did hear the nearby Mute Swan do a brief serenade of grunts and snorts though -- the first time I've ever heard this species vocalization. Anyone know if the swan on Lake Whetstone is a "kept" bird, as I suspect?
