It was FUH-reezing when I arrived at Lake Whetstone = around dawn. I spent about an hour there, then stopped by Gunners Lake, = Black Hill Regional Park, and finally at Seneca Creek State Park. Though = I struck out on the goose, I spotted some other nice birds. Below is not = a complete list, but some of the highlights. Lake Whetstone: Mute Swan - Though it never left the water, I could see its legs when it = swam and did not see a band on either leg, so maybe it's not an escapee. American Wigeon - 2 Hooded Mergansers - 2 Ring-necked Ducks Black Ducks Gunners Lake: American Coot Black Hill: near bridge on Rte 121 small Canada Goose - this bird was noticeably smaller than the = surrounding Canadas and had a short bill. It was too far out for me to = get any more field marks. Tundra Swans - 2 Canvasbacks Buffleheads Common Goldeneyes Common Mergansers Pied-billed Grebes Ruddy Ducks near parking lot past bridge, on right side of 121 Lesser Scaup Hooded Mergansers from visitor's center Herring Gull Seneca Creek State Park: Common Goldeneye - this is the first one I've seen there. Maybe a 1st = year male.
