The higher the better. Besides creepers and the expected woodpeckers, a suet feeder like this will also attract nuthatches and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. For three winters we have also had a female Ruby-crowned Kinglet visiting this suet. We use either the pepper-flavored suet or the "pure suet" (no seeds) to discourage gray squirrels. If you cast a light on this feeder at night, you may see Flying Squirrels coming to the pure suet. Good luck.
