However, Nancy and I put = in some time birding Chestertown, Quaker Neck and Cliffs City Landing = yesterday, and I did a bit of afternoon birding on Saturday. On Saturday afternoon I spent most of my time nosing around the Swan = Creek area and Rock Hall. Highlights for the outing were good raptors, = including both regular accipiters, harrier, and seven Bald Eagles; two = meadowlarks at the horse farm near Swan Point; an EASTERN PHOEBE on a = roadside wire near the ball field at the north entrance to Rock Hall on = MD-445; and decent numbers of waterfowl off the Rock Hall public beach = including 55 Canvasback, and a single hen REDHEAD. Yesterday, we managed to locate 50 bird species in spite of the cold = rain and snow. There were 21 Common Mergansers off Wilmer Park in = Chestertown; 90 Ring-necked Ducks at the John Hanson Rd ponds (all = hanging around aerators keeping little leads open); a Great Horned Owl = (an atlas record since it was within "safe dates"), Winter Wren, and 3 = Fox Sparrows along Old Town Rd on Quaker Neck; and 70 American Pipits on = Langford Road west of the intersection with Brices Mill Rd. Birding was = often like pulling teeth, but, as usual, there were pleasant = compensations for making the effort.
