All the reports are in and the final tally was 87 species = which ties our previous high. Despite having only 19 observers and some = territories left uncovered everyone turned in a superb effort. Open = water remained at both Piney Run and Liberty Lake concentrating the = waterfowl. Sparrow numbers were generally low for the coverage this = year. It has been suggested that West Nile Virus may be partly = responsible for the low numbers of crows and small resident passerines. = Notable species missed were Great Horned Owl, Screech Owl, and Common = Grackle. Here is the tally: Pied-billed Grebe 5 Great Blue Heron 5 Black Vulture 16 (low) Turkey Vulture 104 Tundra Swan 1at Piney Run (only the third count record) Greater White-fronted Goose 2 (single sightings at Piney Run and = Liberty Lake) Snow Goose 1 blue at Piney Run (third count record) Canada Goose 7180 Wood Duck 22 at Liberty Lake ( a remarkable new high) Gadwall 2 Baldpate 52 Black Duck 160 Mallard 1072 Pintail 6 Green-winged Teal 2 Canvasback 20 Redhead 17 Ring-necked Duck 41 Lesser Scaup 5 Bufflehead 32 Goldeneye 1 Hooded Merganser 57 Common Merganser 73 Ruddy Duck 25 Bald Eagle 1 adult at Piney Run Harrier 5 Sharp-shinned Hawk 2 Cooper's Hawk 3 Red-shouldered Hawk 11 Red-tailed Hawk 54 Kestrel 14 (very low) Coot 40 Killdeer 3 Snipe 4 Ring-billed Gull 337 Feral Pigeon 424 Mourning Dove 297 Barred Owl 3 Short-eared Owl 1 Belted Kingfisher 5 Red-headed Woodpecker 13 (ties previous high) Red-bellied Woodpecker 98 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 8 Downy Woodpecker 76 Hairy Woodpecker 24 Flicker 73 Pileated Woodpecker 9 Horned Lark 46 Blue Jay 183 American Crow 359 (low) Fish Crow 1 Carolina Chickadee 110 (low) Tufted Titmouse 68 (low) Red-breasted Nuthatch 4 White-breasted Nuthatch 54 Brown Creeper 8 Carolina Wren 30 (low) Winter Wren 4 Golden-crowned Kinglet 14 (low) Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 Bluebird 36 (new low) Hermit Thrush 10 Robin 24 Mockingbird 79 Pipit 5 Cedar Waxwing 80 Starling 2573 Yellow-rumped Warbler 30 Towhee 19 (new high) Tree Sparrow 41 Field Sparrow 7 (low) Savannah Sparrow 1 Fox Sparrow 5 Song Sparrow 142 Swamp Sparrow 6 White-throated Sparrow 447 White-crowned Sparrow 95 Junco 571 Cardinal 245 Red-winged Blackbird 4 Meadowlark 3 Cowbird 14 Purple Finch 10 (high) House Finch 86 (new low) Pine Siskin 1 Goldfinch 121 House Sparrow 207 (low) Thanks to everyone that participated and especially to the Schwaabs = who hosted the tally.
