Tree Sparrows at UMBC last week in the research park near both of the storm water ponds in the research park. Trouble is, the most productive area for these birds has JUST been closed for construction of a new building and they have no tresspassing signs up. However, one can still access the primary storm water pond where I saw one Tree Sparrow. Directions: Take I-195 west from BWI airport and go to the last exit marked "UMBC." While still on the exit ramp, pull off to the right and park before coming to any of the campus parking area signs (you might get ticketed by parking in a campus spot). Walk into the research park on the right and when you come to the construction gate (there's no fence; just a gate), walk around it to the right and head down a path to a storm water pond. It's in this little stretch that I found a tree sparrow last week. If this doesn't work, cut through the woods to the left and when you come out the other side you'll be at the other storm water pond where I usually see the tree sparrows among many field sparrows. By cutting through the woods you'll avoid the construction area and possible questioning. This is the best I can do. Hope it helps.
