I was not disappointed, and I found seven woodpecker species present. The Red-headed Woodpecker greeted me by feeding on the ground in the middle of Sycamore Landing Road! There were also Yellow-rumps and RC Kinglets present. I had hoped for some waterfowl on the Potomac, however, it is pretty much full of ice flowing downstream, leaving no open water for birds. There was also one Savannah Sparrow along the road. On the edge of one of the cornfields there was a flock of 50 White-throated Sparrows and one Eastern Towhee. It was very cold but worth the trip. Question: as I noticed lots of public hunting signs, should I have been wearing blaze orange? That is, is it still deer season?
